Longview Power provides considerable social and economic benefits to Morgantown, West Virginia and the surrounding region.
In stark contrast to a national economic downturn, Longview Power began 2009 with over 500 construction jobs; maximum employment is expected to exceed 1800 jobs during peak construction phases. Longview will also utilize local coal reserves and suppliers, providing additional local jobs in mining and support services. The project will cushion the effects of the national recession on the Morgantown MSA, adding as much as 2.8% to annual employment in the region.*
Longview expects to spend over $551 million of direct local expenditures in Monongalia and Preston counties and the adjacent counties in Pennsylvania during the construction phase of the project, and an estimated $313.8 million in labor income will be earned. Longview Power will also generate an estimated $23.6 million in additional state and local tax revenues over the four-year construction phase.
Upon completion, Longview will employ almost 100 workers with well-paying jobs for ongoing operations. Almost all will live locally, providing continuing support for local businesses, housing, tax rolls, and community organizations. Ongoing operations will increase state and local revenues by an estimated $7.9 million annually and will increase annual labor income by an estimated $43 million.
Longview Power recognizes the importance of good corporate citizenship. Regional organizations have already received numerous donations and assistance from Longview’s owners, construction contractors, and workers, including donations to schools, fire departments, environmental organizations, participation in food drives, gift collections, work on area ball fields, and more. The Longview team will strive for recognition as good corporate citizens and valued members of our host communities for many years to come.
